Little Shop of Arts and Antiques

A lovely weekend visiting my friend who paints, Becky, and the second weekend of her gallery opening in the Little Shop of Arts and Antiques in Lilburn, GA.  The brain child of Barbara Barth...author, artist, antique collector/seller, shop keeper, promoter, you name it, she runs this delightful little shop that is full of color, energy and has it all.  A cozy little place, it is filled to the brim with all treasures imaginable from original art by local artisans, hand crafted steam punk jewelry, antiques, and gift items.  Look above, look below, inside drawers and cabinets, there is treasure hidden everywhere.

Everywhere you turn there are tiny vignettes of style and design.

Clementine is dressed and moved from room to room at shop owner, Barbara's whim.  Today she was wearing an Edwardian waist shirt, sassy scarf and vintage hat.

Vintage time pieces...perfect for the time watch collector or your local white rabbit.

Robin's egg  blue eggs in silver have a rich, yet simplistic look to them.

Even a children's corner with antique desk, vintage rag dolls, and lots of  books for reading time.

Love this mannequin's look of vintage slips and pretty latigo and pressed leather, vintage purses.

A stack of original art is enticing.

Growing up as a Kosher-Catholic, I have a fondness for vintage Catholic items and you will find these throughout the shop. (I always marry up menorah's with creche's at Christmas)

Don't you just love this pretty pink washstand?  So many nifty things can be found here.  Will have to return often to say hello to new and old friends and to find a treasure or two.

Found some great items over the weekend.  I love 18th and 19th century pieces.  This pretty plum pudding stoneware piece dates from the 1840s.

Neat little Peter Rabbit book from the 1940s.
Pretty, little color plates inside too.

Nifty pair of vintage tap panties.  Original price tag still intact.

A second pair of vintage panties.  Original union label and tag still attached.  Circa 1960s.

A nice assortment of vintage lace hankerchiefs.  I convert these into christening caps.

I'm a sucker for old shoes.  This pretty pair of antique children's shoes have pearl buttons on the ankle strap.  Well worn, I wonder how many hours were spent jumping rope in these.  Circa 1900s.

Sorry about the blurred photograph.  I didn't realize that my flash was off and the room was dusky.  Still, this is a lovely print from a convent.  The Holy Mother with her Son, Jesus.  Original ornate frame, bubble glass and wood backing.  Circa late 1890s.

A pair of traveler's alarm clocks...all in perfect walking order and loud alarm still works.  Neat little oil can that has the original price tag from J. J. Newberry and a price of 15 cents.

Pretty little antique marigold, carnival glass small bowl.  Great early piece with a marvelous lustre to it.

and finally, three antique, needle etched wine stems. I love needle etched glass and crystal.  Very popular in the late 1800s and through the 1920s-30s before machine etched glass took over in popularity and demand. There is something so exquisite about this fine etch work.  These are either Fosteria or Tiffen...pattern unknown.  Circa 1920s.

So it was a wonderful weekend visiting the Little Shop of Arts and Antiques in Lilburn, GA and then a weekend of some great finds for my booths.  I hope you all have a pleasant week.  Sea Witch

Universal spent on big deal, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

So, it's a deal! Universal has taken the domestic distribution right of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, the most promising movie of the year, and I bet it will be worth-anticipated for the movie!

It is a movie on a former MI:6 operative agent comes out from retirement to identify the traitor within the MI:6. This movie is directed by Tomas Alferson (director of Let The Right One In!). And of course, it is formed by a pretty strong cast, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth (recent Oscar winner!), Tom Hardy, Mark Strong (One of my fav!), Toby Jones and John Hurt. Now, they got Universal, a nice and classic storyline, I can't see how this film is going to disappoint the audience!

Oldman as Smiley~

Tom Hardy on the set of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy!

Well, the cast is so strong that you have no worry at all on the acting, now we would like to see how Tomas Alferson is going to present this classic drama series and squeeze it into a 2 hours screenplay! And for Gary Oldman's Smiley character, previously potrayed by Alec Guinness.

"It’s proper work, and I haven’t done that for a long time. I’ve played some amazing roles and I’ve had a good run, but this is something else. And it’s like coming home. I can’t remember the last time I played an Englishman,” Oldman on playing George Smiley and involved in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

Oldman's acting is as convincing as he always does, so who knows? Smiley's role might win Gary something, you know the one that just won by his co-star Colin Firth recently!

I'm really looking forward into this film. It will be released around late November or December this year, probably will be here (...in Malaysia) next year only if they consider to be released at the same time. Can't wait for that!

(PS : Ah, it might be released at the same time with Sherlock Holmes 2! Holmes or Smiley? )

Buying gifts for women can be a challenge. No matter what the occasion - Christmas, Valentine's Day, anniversary or birthday - men struggle with what to buy the women in their lives. The majority of women are actually pretty easy to buy for. Stick with any of these gifts ideas and you can't go wrong.

Cashmere Gifts

You can’t go wrong with anything cashmere. While it can be expensive to buy a cashmere sweater, there are smaller articles made from cashmere that are more affordable and just as luxurious. Consider gifts for her such as a cashmere scarf, gloves, shawl, wrap, socks, tights, even cashmere slippers You want 100 percent cashmere and not a wool blend.

Bath & Body Products

The majority of women love bath and body products that make them feel or smell better. Go for products that sound or look like dessert – gingerbread, candy cane, whip cream, chocolate. Philosophy and Just Desserts are two companies that make flavored body products.

Watch Ideas

A watch is a great gift for women. Even if she already has a watch, every woman needs more than one. If her current watch is sporty or every day, maybe buy her a dressy watch to wear for going out. If she already has a fancy watch, go for something trendier. Fossil has a great selection of both types of watches for women.

Music Presents

If buying any kind of popular music gadget like an iPod (get it in one of the new bright colors), preload it with all of her favorite songs. If not sure what music she likes, safe music choices for most older women include Michael Bublé, Celine Dion and Barbra
Streisand, and Gwen Stefani, Fergie, Rhianna and Nelly Furtado for younger women

Sheepskin Gifts

Women love anything lined in sheepskin in the colder months. For a gift for her try sheepskin-lined slippers, mittens, boots, and hoodies

Cosmetic and Fragrance Gift Sets

Companies such as Estée Lauder and Clinique are always giving away a gift of promotional items, such as a purse or product samples, with the purchase one of their products. All women love getting these sets as it gives them a chance to try the other products. Even if they do not wear a lot of makeup, there is usually one product in the promotion set they will like, such as moisturizer or nail polish.

Most women like perfume, if they are not allergic. If there is not a particular perfume she regularly wears, try the Scent Sampler Best Sellersfrom Sephora which contains 10 samples of their best selling fragrances.

Chocolate Gifts

Chocolate is always a great gift for women but it is better to buy the gourmet, decadent type and not just a box of chocolates from the drug store. A great gift for her would be the Dark Chocolate Indulgence

Sleep Lounge Wear Gift Ideas

Most ladies prefer to change out of their work clothes into something more comfortable when they get home. As such, they would love lounge wear like a velour hoodie and yoga pants set. Try online at Victoria's Secret or Athleta. Get it in a basic color like grey, khaki or black. A designer workout bag is also a great gift idea for her. Even better, monogram it with her initials. Be sure to see Personalized Gift Ideas for her.

Purse Size Photo Album
Many times women are out with their friends and they ask to see pictures of the kids and they have none with them. So take favorite photos of her and the family and create a purse-sized photo book for her. The brag book should ideally be about 4 inches by 4 inches to fit in most purses. Photo clutches are also popular too. Try the It's a Girl Thing! purse size photo album from Kate Aspen or make a customized brag book at Picaboo.com.

Pearl Gift Ideas

Pearls, such as earrings, necklaces, chokers, or bracelets, are a timeless gift for women. They should be cultured, not imitation, and preferably graded AA+ or AAA quality. They are a classic piece that every woman can wear for a formal evening. Check out more romantic gift ideas for her.

Her Favorite Series on DVD
Find out what her favorite television show was from her childhood or current day and buy the entire series for her on DVD.
There are obviously many choices when trying to find the best gifts for the women in
your life, but any of these ideas would make most women happy.

J-Street: Not Kosher !

You would think that even a George Soros funded, anti-Israeli, anti-Semitic group that was trying to pass itself off as the mainstream voice of American Judaism would have the smarts to offer some Kosher cuisine at their conference.

Ah....no:

When I arrived at the conference this morning, before 8 a.m., I asked a staff person if the breakfast would include kosher options. She told me it would. But when the food arrived, there was nothing kosher to be found–not even fruit. I sufficed with coffee and decided to wait for lunch, when–with an hour of free time–I could rush on the metro to a kosher restaurant.

When that time came, I got ready to hurry out of the conference room only to be told by multiple J Street staffers that there were sandwiches for purchase across the building and yes, some of them were kosher.

You can guess what happened next. I arrived at the sandwich cart and requested the kosher option. I got a blank stare in return, and when I asked the manager she told me she had no idea what I was talking about. She hadn’t heard anything about kosher sandwiches. The best they could do, they said, was a regular turkey sandwich with the cheese taken off. No good.

From the comments:

I attended the conference last year with a small group of open-minded Orthodox students from my university, no kosher food to be found. We notified one of the senior staff of J Street who apologized and told us it was an organizational slip, that they had ordered kosher food but it somehow didn’t arrive. At least this time they didn’t lie about not expecting any observant attendees.

Funny. Is J-Street knowingly so far out of whack with traditional Jewish values that they assumed any Jews who even went to the trouble of keeping Kosher would never show their face at their conference? Or was it a deliberate slap in the face to observant Jews, a way to make them uncomfortable and feeling unwelcome?

Why not just host a pig roast, and get it out in the open and over with?

Jews may be perceived as smart, but they are really simply better educated, which outside of Israel has not helped their survival skills any (would you rather be lost in the woods with Sarah Palin or Barack Obama?). Liberals too as a whole may also be better educated but have less common sense than your average bricklayer. You would think that, in order to maintain the charade that J-Street is some type of "Jewish" organization, they would at least make a feeble
attempt at keeping kosher.

Comical in its ineptness, like so much of the Left's efforts. The equivalent, I suppose, of a Russian spy trying to work his way into secret corridors without dropping his
Boris Badenov accent. One would shake their heads before showing them the door.

Which is what should happen to J-Street, of course. Which is what would happen, if so many weren't intent on seeing them succeed...
